Healthy Snacks

22nd Jul 2013 If your anything like me, then you like food... a lot. Initially, when I
hopped on the healthy bandwagon and cut all the crap out of my diet I was left wondering what there was left to munch on! Below is a list of my go to snacks.

Fresh Fruit

  • Apples
  • Mixed Berries
  • Frozen grapes
  • Banana
  • Fresh pineapple chunks
    Berry Smoothies

  • Mango

  • Blend fruit with probiotic natural yoghurt to make a smoothie.
  • Mix fruit together for a fruit salad.
  • Have nut butter (peanut or almond) on the side to dip the fruit in. (make sure its not full of salt!)
  • Blending fruit e.g Banana, and then freezing it, is a great alternative to ice-cream.(and its delish- Add cacao nibs, cinnamon, vanilla, honey, nut butter etc for healthy toppings)

  • Carrot sticks
    Mango and Strawberries

  • Celery sticks
  • Red, yellow and green peppers
  • Cucumber sticks
  • Kale crisps

  • Vegetable kebabs- can be chilled or roasted.
  • Have a healthy dip on the side (see below)
  • Vegetables are so low calorie you could munch on them all day without worrying about your waist line!
    Kale Chips

  • Baking kale in the oven for 20mins in a small amount of olive oil will make them crispy- Ideal with salads or as a snack.

Spreads & Dips

  • Guacamole (made with avocado)
Berry Tea with Apple and Almond Butter

  • Hummus (makde with Chickpeas)
  • Pesto
  • Nut butters- cashew, almond, peanut, hazelnut.
  • Cottage cheese

  • Make the dips from scratch- it’s healthier and a lot of the time works out cheaper! Or if you lack any culinary skills like me, then you can buy them in your supermarket! Just check the ingredients to make sure they are not full of salt and persevatives.
  • Enjoy the dips with vegetables (e.g. hummus and carrot sticks)
    Home Popped Popcorn

  • Use the dips as a spread on healthy cakes & crackers (rice cakes and cottage cheese)

  • Whole-wheat crackers
  • Rice cakes
  • Oat cakes
  • Ryvita
  • Corn cakes
Ricecakes with Banana and Nut Butter

  • Popcorn
  • Spelt cakes

  • Substitute these for bread in your diet.
  • Make your own popcorn from Kernels instead of buying microwave or the packaged kind. This tip is great when your trying to watch your salt intake i.e. before holidays :) As you are in control of how much salt goes on!
  • Add fruit and nut butter (e.g. peanut butter with banana on Ryvita)

Nuts & Seeds

  • Almonds
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds

  • A handful of mixed nuts will keep hunger at bay- Try having 8 almonds when you are hungry. You will be surprised about how much they fill you and keep you going. Nuts are my go-to snack before a workout.
    Nakd Bars

  • Nuts and seeds help to prevent cravings- add them to dips, spreads and on top of fruit salads.

Sweet treats

  • Naked Bars
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Pitted Dates
  • Mixed Berry herbal tea
You can find all of these in your local supermarkets. Of course they are not as healthy as fruit and veg BUT when you want to be bold go for the less-bold option instead.

Happy Snacking :)
